The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA), in accordance to the
American College of Surgeons (ACS), provides direct aid to the
primary surgeon in all aspects of surgery. This includes exposure,
hemostasis, closure (multi-modality), and all other technical
functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation leading
to optimal results. Also, the CSA, aides in implantation, removal,
manipulation, and securing of devices, prosthetics, tissues, and
drains. In addition to, the CSA, may even harvest vein, arterial,
and tissue grafts. The CSA performs all of these functions under
the direct supervision of the surgeon. Will be able to maintain
privacy, confidentiality and dignity of patients. Provides patients
with clear explanations and adequate information regarding care and
treatment. Responds to patient's request quickly providing a quiet,
caring environment during their stay. Reinforces service recovery
program and identifies service recovery opportunities.
Utilizes critical thinking skills in all areas of the Surgical
Establishes and maintains a safe perioperative environment. Uses
aseptic technique and demonstrates surgical conscience as a moral
obligation to self, others, and patients.
Provides technical assistance under the direction of the surgeon
throughout the perioperative phase including visualization of the
operative site, exposure, hemostasis, closure, and all other
advanced technical aspects of the operative procedure. (See above
Establishes and maintains a professional relationship with all
member of the perioperative team.
Maintains and directly manipulates all equipment pertinent to
all surgical procedures. Assists with the coordination of all
equipment and supplies for each case based on a protocol and/or
physician preference list. Assists with inventory control and
maintenance of all equipment.

A. Education / Training:
- High school diploma required. Possess Surgical Technologist
Certification (CST) as offered by the Association of Surgical
Technologists. Completion of an accredited Surgical Tech First
Assistant Program and shall achieve Surgical Tech First Assistant
Certification (CSTFA) within two years of completing first
B. Work Experience:
- Two years surgical assisting experience preferred
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- BLS certification required
D. Other Qualifications:
- Specialized knowledge of surgical conditions, clinical signs
and symptoms and alternative forms of treatment in various age
A. Physical Effort:
- The employee must be able to tolerate standing for long periods
of time and must demonstrate ability to work with moderate to heavy
lifting at times.
B. Work Environment:
- This position requires a highly skilled technical individual
that can work in a high paced, high stress environment which deals
with direct patient care under possible life-threatening
