General Summary:

The MRI Clinical Research Physicist is a key position within Beaumont AOIS project and the one most likely to develop IP through development of new MRI image guided/adaptive radiotherapy. This position is expected to lead clinical translational research and clinical implementation using MRI image in radiotherapy treatment, and also to develop funded extramural research grants. In addition, this MRI physicist will provide technical support on clinical protocols and routine patient scanning on the MR linac and the stand alone 3T MRI, as well as operations of the small animal 3T MR device, in Radiation Oncology.

Essential Duties:

  • Research -develop a research team to explore advanced and novel MR imaging techniques, including novel MR sequence, MR coil and data processing, to improve patient soft-tissue contrast and target delineation, as well as

obtaining functional and biological images, i.e. CEST, APTwith images. Develop research and clinical protocols for MR image guided adaptive radiotherapy, and integrate the MR unit into radiotherapy treatment and planning process. Provide technical support for all clinical research protocols. Develop and lead on novel technique and research directions for clinical translational research, and attract extramural research grants for MR image guided radiotherapy.

  • Clinical Patient Care - provide technical support and QA on routine MRI treatment simulation including imaging techniques, image quality, image processing and patient position detection/correction. Provide support on segmentation, registration and treatment planning of using MRI image. Development of quality assurance initiatives and a comprehensive quality management program for MRI simulation and online/offline guided treatment.
  • Working with service personnel to assure and facilitate repairs. Responsible for equipment update, evaluation

and testing. Evaluating MRI equipment (including the clinical MRI and the small animal MRI devices) to maximize image quality, insure patient safety and comply with the requirements of regulatory and accrediting bodies on the state and federal level.

  • Administration- recruiting and managing the research team.
  • Teaching and Training - participation in the physics instruction for residency education. Ongoing education of the

physicians, physics residents and staff in technology, radiation safety and quality assurance.

Standard Requirements:

  • PhD in Physics, Medical Physics, or closely related field. (These are also required for eligibility for board certification).
  • Board Certification in MRI Physics (ABMP) or Diagnostic Radiological Physics (ABR), or equivalent is preferred.
  • 5 years experience in MR image Physics, ideally with leadership experience on MR image research and development. Active external research support preferred.
  • A high level of communication, writing, computer and mathematical skills, as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment are required. Solid people skills for interacting with patients, physicians, physicists, technologists, internal and external support staff. A track record of external funding is preferred. A high commitment to

the understanding, maintenance and improvement of the quality of MR imaging.
