Job Description:
GENERAL SUMMARY:To provide comprehensive genetic counseling
services to individuals and families seeking information about
genetic conditions and to provide risk assessment. The genetic
counselor practices as a part of a genetic service team,
communicating genetic, medical and technical information with the
knowledge and insight into the psychosocial and cultural
experiences important to each patient and family.ESSENTIAL
DUTIES:1. Provides genetic counseling services, evaluates patient
and family health educational needs, initiates appropriate genetic
risk assessment and plan appropriate screening tests.2. Assess the
needs of patients, significant others and family members. Obtains
insurance pre-authorization, drafts letters of medical necessity
and processes billing.3. Facilitate appropriate medical and
psychosocial follow-up for high-risk patients and their families.
Acts as a patient or family advocate. Documents care/teaching
consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory
standards.4. Communicates and collaborates with other members of
the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and
coordination of services. Attends and presents relevant conferences
as it relates to clinical genetics and other healthcare.5. Networks
locally and nationally to increase awareness of the Beaumont
Clinical Genetics Program. Participates in regional and national
professional organizations to promote genetics best practices.6.
Participates in educational programs for other health care
professionals, educators or lay public.This document represents the

universal precautions - reports and prevents/corrects unsafe
conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and
departmental safety programs.7. Completes all required compliance
standards that may be department specific and/or identified by the
organization.8. Maintains current licensure, registration and/or
certification, as applicable, at all times.STANDARD
QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must
be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge,

essential duties.A. Education / Training:---Masters prepared
genetic counselor.---Graduate of an accredited Genetic Counseling
Program.B. Work Experience:---Experience in Clinical Genetics. Two
(2) years of experience in clinical genetic services preferred.C.
Certification, Licensure, Registration:---Board certified or
board-eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the
American Board of Genetic Counselors required. Board-eligible
candidates must become board certified within two (2) years of
hire/transfer date.---Active Genetic Counselor License in the State
of Michigan required, or eligible for temporary licensure according
to the State of Michigan guidelines.D. Other
Qualifications:---Excellent written and verbal communication skills
to counsel patients and write publications.---Computer knowledge
W/P and basic data retrieval.WORKING CONDITIONS:A. Physical Effort:
Position requires incumbent to frequently perform motor skills such
as answering the telephone, writing, computer typing, and use of
other office equipment. Work requires prolonged periods of sitting.
May experience mental/visual fatigue from review of data, reports,
etc. Requires visual acuity to focus and read/interpret data.B.
Work Environment: Outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital setting
with exposure to a variety of substances within these
