SUMMARY

The HVAC testing team consists of test engineers, technicians, and a supervisor who sit and operate in the HVAC test area of the Validation laboratory on the Troy campus. They interact with internal product engineering who benchmark, design, release, and test new products & subsystems at our facility for HVAC and EC applications including new hybrid, electrified, and fuel cell applications.

The HVAC testing team's primary purposes and objectives are to support, schedule, coordinate, and execute component and subsystem level testing of automotive & truck HVAC & EC products. The testing is necessary to validate the design & production intent of products and subsystems for MAHLE BU3. This testing can involve benchmarking, devolvement and/or validation of automotive/truck HVAC, Powertrain, and BEV/hybrid products and their interaction with other components or subsystems in the vehicle. Examples of HVAC durability test activities are HVAC Module Door Life cycle testing, Actuator Torque testing, Blower Motor spalling, Creep Seal testing, Continuous High Temp test, Condenser Thermal cycle test, Freeze Thaw Operation test, etc.

The environmental chamber durability technician's role is to be responsible for performing the execution of test article installation & removal, test set-ups, daily recording, and test data review for accuracy, communicate with test and product engineers regarding test specifications & control setpoints, and ensure testing is meeting stated purposes and objectives. Assistance in equipment maintenance is also required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate environmental chamber controls for temperature and humidity. Verify setpoints by referencing test specifications, given by requesters, and/or test engineers.
  • Install test articles in and out of an EV chamber while observing chamber systems which control the test parameters.
  • Communicate with the lab and internal customer on test set-up, test plan, and test goals before, during, and after the test.
  • Coordinate with test engineers to record test data, ensure data files are complete & accurate, and deliver a digital copy of data to the customer.
  • Check out DAQ instrumentation and set-up configuration.
  • Identify issues with instrumentation and variance from expected test outcome.
  • Assist in developing and organizing test sequences and automated test profiles for use in the EV test area or other areas of the lab.
  • Identify test stand control problems. Communicate and document issues for proper resolution.
  • Perform walk around of multiple chambers / stands while on test (also note and/or complete general maintenance issue identification & safety items).
  • Assist in minor upkeep and maintenance of test equipment.
  • Assist to rework, instrument, or fabricate items on test as required. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
    • High school diploma or GED is required. Associates degree or Technical Certificate is desired.
    • 2 or more years' experience working on automotive or truck testing, required.
    • Experience with components such as HVAC modules, condensers, evaporators, and heater cores desired.
    • Knowledge and experience with automotive HVAC / EC module testing, linearity/temperature control curve testing, air flow test stands, environmental chambers, door / actuator life cycle durability testing, spalling and blower wheel burst testing, data acquisition, and instrumentation preferred.
    • Fabrication of wire harnesses and connectors highly desired.
    • Knowledge and experience with EV chamber durability testing, controls, and operation, highly desired. Automotive refrigerant systems knowledge and experience a plus.
    • Basic knowledge of IATF/TS16949, ISO14001, ISO45001 and TISAX audit requirements for a test area is preferred.
    • Ability to read schematics, test specifications, use computers and hand tools required.
    • Knowledge of instrumentation and sensors and how to connect them mechanically and electrically to equipment (thermocouples, flowmeters, banners, etc. is required.
